It is interesting that this book doesn't just end with the sister's release from Auschwitz like most other WWII memoirs but carries on and explains how the sisters slowly heal and move on with the rest of their lives.

Although I had an inkling what was going on with Colin as there was a hidden clue near the beginning of the book, I still didn’t imagine what came AFTER that revelation. Heather captures the beautiful, peaceful lives that Ema and her family enjoyed in Vranov, and the helplessness, chaos and horrible tragedies that these strong, incredible sisters endured and witnessed.A vitally important book to never forget, and a reminder of the depth of human hope, love, and the will to survive. This is book about, as the title suggests, three sisters and the man who comes crashing into their lives.

The tone of the book (for me), felt elementary and the dialogue between the sisters felt too sugary-sappy, for my taste. And today, there are men and women and children in Afghanistan and Haiti and so many other countries who will live and die without being remembered.Magda is saved by a doctor in their home town who keeps her in hospital for safety as long as he can before she has to be released. The book includes themes of rape, death, divorce, and sexual harassment allegations however the execution is poor on all fronts.

I won't go into more details as I don't want to risk giving anything away but Owen really has done an amazing job constructing an addictive and explosive psychological thriller with fantastic and varied characters that you just won't be able to put down! Their father asked all three of his daughters when they were still young girls to promise him that they would always stay together and look out for one another. The author did an excellent job pushing this topic forward and showing the reader how endless and life consuming this guilt can be. In 1942, as teenagers, they left their home (a little family background at the start, along with the basic conditions and circumstances of the times)…. They were forced to perform strenuous and senseless hard labor each and every day no matter how hot or cold it was outside.Includes rape for no reason, and the plot twist at the end would’ve been great had I not guessed it very early on. It is not until you got to these revelations that you suddenly changed your view about a person or remembered something mentioned earlier in the book. It details how Cibi and Livia had to do anything they could to survive, how they were shown moments of kindness, how they’re love for each other kept them going.
